There’s truly no better place to celebrate the season than Puerto Vallarta. Christmas time comes alive, starting December 1 with the traditional Festival of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Visitors can witness one of the year’s most traditional, meaningful and enduring festivities from December 1-12. The celebration includes elaborate processions that parade through downtown and Mexican Christmas posadas (parties), bringing together locals and tourists in the spirit of the season.
Processions are filled with colorful banners, lively music and singing, and vibrantly decorated floats, primarily featuring scenes of the Virgin and Juan Diego. They commemorate the miraculous apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe to the Indian peasant, Juan Diego, on December 12th, 1531. Along the way, vendors sell food, sweets, artisan crafts and souvenirs.
The 12-day festival culminates with thousands of local Puerto Vallarta businesses, neighborhoods and organizations, parading with candles from their place of employment through the streets of Puerto Vallarta to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral, which was built in 1903.
