The MICHELIN Guide does not announce itself in advance. There is no application, no committee to lobby, no way to prepare beyond simply doing the work you believe in and hoping someone notices. So when we learned that Casa Kimberly had been named one of the first hotels in Mexico to receive a MICHELIN Key — and one of only a handful in all of Puerto Vallarta — it arrived as something closer to a quiet revelation than a celebration.

We have always known what Casa Kimberly is. A nine-suite hotel on a cobblestone hillside in Old Town Puerto Vallarta, built into two houses that once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. A place small enough that the staff learn your name before you have finished checking in. A place where the mornings are unhurried, the views of Banderas Bay are never not beautiful, and the evenings at The Iguana restaurant tend to run later than anyone planned.

What the MICHELIN Key confirmed, and what we are most grateful for,  is that this way of doing things is recognized. That intimacy is a form of excellence. That nine suites is not a limitation but a philosophy.

The MICHELIN Key is awarded to hotels that offer something beyond comfort: a distinct point of view, a quality of attention, a sense that the place itself has been thought about. Not assembled – thought about. Every suite at Casa Kimberly was individually designed, drawing on the original character of these two historic homes — the antique armoires, the hand-painted tiles, the claw-foot tubs, the terraces that look out over red rooftops and open water. The Elizabeth Taylor Suite retains her own private pool and wrap-around terrace. The Richard Burton Suite still carries the feeling of a writer’s retreat, with exposed rafters and a quality of solitude that explains why he chose it.

Puerto Vallarta was, for many years, overlooked by the luxury travel world. That has changed, and we think it has changed for the right reasons — not because the city has been polished into something it is not, but because people are discovering what has always been here. The Zona Romántica, the neighborhood where Casa Kimberly sits, is one of the most genuinely beautiful urban neighborhoods in Mexico. Cobblestone streets, bougainvillea, the sound of the ocean blocks away. The MICHELIN recognition puts a point on what travelers who have been coming here for years already knew.

For us, the Key is also a responsibility. It raises the question we ask ourselves every day: what does this mean in practice? It means the flowers in every suite are fresh. It means that when a guest mentions, in passing, that they are celebrating something, the team remembers. It means that our spa, our pool, our kitchen at The Iguana, and every interaction between staff and guest should carry the same standard of care.

We are proud of this recognition. We are also aware that the work it reflects is ongoing. A MICHELIN Key is not a destination — it is a direction.
